Motion Graphics Recreation

For this project, we were supposed to recreate a piece of motion graphics we admired. I chose to model mine after old CD-ROM multimedia pieces. My specific inspirations included Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong Nou and Bad Day at the Midway.

The story of the piece was taken, in part, from alchemical mythos. I’ve always been interested in alchemy as both pre-science chemistry and as a philosophical concept. For alchemists, there was no separation between their studies and their religion. Doing alchemical research and experiments was an act of meditation, of worship. European alchemists developed a codified way of communication. This was to keep their practice away from those they considered unable to understand their path to enlightenment.

The ultimate achievement for European alchemists was to create the Philosopher’s Stone, a substance which was said to be able to turn base metals like lead into precious ones like gold and silver. This, of course, was never fully realized. They were all very certain about the steps and reactions along the way, though.

Made for VICO 3420: Motion Graphics at Ohio University.
